The upcoming Chromecast with Google TV might not be in buying range

Google Chromecast

Next month, Google will launch the Pixel 7 and Pixel 7 Pro. Along with new smartphones, Google will release the Pixel Watch and Nest smart home gadgets. Leaks claim the corporation may also unveil Chromecast with Google TV (HD) at the event.

Chromecast with Google TV (HD) could ship with Android 12 with an Amlogic S805X2 SoC and 1.5GB of RAM. Unreleased firmware for the device reveals AV1 decoding and virtual A/B seamless updates with compression. Leaker SnoopyTech claims the Chromecast with Google TV (HD) will cost $40 in the U.S.

The new Chromecast costs $40, $10 less than the 4K model. Nobody expected that. Given the new device’s 1080p resolution, it makes logical to spend more for the 4K model, right? If you don’t have a 4K TV or computer, the “cheaper” Chromecast may be a better buy.

First, Chromecast HD will ship with Android 12. The 4K Chromecast is still on Android 10 and may never get a big OS update owing to storage capacity.

The newer model’s seamless storage could be another advantage. A developer looked into Chromecast HD firmware and found A/B updates. Google wouldn’t need to store updates on-device, making it easier to bring out new software and security patches.
